My how time flies

Ken Johnston

Next week the kids head back to school and fall officially starts... well at least in my line of work.
If someone took the calendar away and I had to tell what time of year it was just by the activities and the level of business going on, I probably could tell you.
January is usually pretty quiet in this neck of the woods. Other than the odd weekend activity most folks stay home and recoup from the holiday season, both financially and physically.
February used to be much the same for the entire month. But March Madness has expanded into Feb. From about the middle of the month until the end of March there is a flurry of winter activities every weekend and some through the week. Hockey, figure skating, school and curling sports dominate.
Then April is quiet. Winter disappears, fishing season closes and people wait for the warmer weather to take hold.
In May tourists start flocking in by mid month kicking off a busy start to the summer.
June is filled with end of the school year activities

like prom and graduations.
July kicks off with Canada Day, Fourth of July and then rolls into Railroad Daze.
August is generally slow until Emo Fair and then the Bass Tournament in Morson and the Labour Day ball tourney signify the end of summer.
September it is the reverse of March Madness... everything kicks into high gear. School starts, as does all the social clubs like the Seniors groups. The pumpkin festival and RR Walleye Tournament keep volunteers and the public busy. School Sports start and before you know it October has arrived.
That month tends to be a bit slower than September with Thanksgiving being the highlight.
Then November comes and we remember the vets who gave their all. The snow begins to fly and the Christmas rush is on.
Then it starts all over again... where does the time go?
–Until then,
Ken
