Coaches Comments & Quotes
Although the weather wasn’t the greatest for spectators ˆ mid-40s and rain ˆ it was a great day for running in Park Rapids Oct. 17.
Seventh grader Saragh Fraser won the girls junior high race in 15 minutes, 17 seconds ˆ 10 seconds ahead of Wadena-Deer Creek‚s Lauren Girard. The duo ran together the whole way and Fraser pulled ahead in the last 150 meters.
The varsity boys did well placing 5th of 12 teams in Park Rapids and pulling their times down to where they were earlier this season. Junior Andrew Friesen missed the top 10 by just one place, completing the course in 18:06. Senior Vincent Scott and junior Brandon Knutson ran their best races of the year - Knutson running more that three minutes faster than he did in International Falls last week. He wants a varsity spot and he‚s working for it every meet.
Senior Madie Heinrich ran her fastest 4000-meter race of the year and came within 21 seconds of her all-time record. She placed 7th, and paced the team to 7th place of 10. Five more varsity girls came within 29 seconds or less of their season best.

Coaches Comments & Quotes
All nine girls ran faster in Bemidji than in Park Rapids the day before, and seven of them ran faster today than they did on the same course Sept. 8. The biggest improvements came from sophomore Felicia Schmutz and freshman Jamie Mollberg who both ran under 19 minutes for the first time. Schmutz had a 34-second PR of 18:42, and Mollberg clocked a 22-second PR in 18:43. Freshman Jennie Buegler ran under 18 minutes for only the second time of her running career, finishing in 17:45. Add senior Madie Heinrich‚s tenth place finish with a season best 16:12 ˆ just 11 seconds off her PR ˆ and senior Jennifer Blodgett’s 9-second PR of 19:23 and it was enough to earn the team 5th of 7 teams. Only one of those teams, Crosby-Ironton, is in our Section.
Sophomore Karlie Eaton and freshman Becca Ney have been struggling to go under 22 minutes most of the year, and both of them did so in Bemidji. Eaton ran a 21:51 - 55 seconds faster than any other race this year - and Ney‚s 21:58 was just 27 seconds off her best from the second meet of the season.
While only two boys ran faster today than on the same course in September, all ten ran faster in Bemidji than in Park Rapids. Two came out with personal records and one more with a season best.
Junior Andrew Friesen went back under 18 minutes in Bemidji, finishing 12th in 17:38. Though off his PR of 17:06, Friesen is still tweaking his race strategy and looking for a return trip to the state meet.
Senior Fred Schulte was more than a minute faster than anything he‚s done this season, and finished the 5000-meter course in 22:22; sophomore Taylor Poole’s 2-second PR was enough to put him fourth on the varsity squad; and senior Vincent Scott pushed closer to his goal by running a season best of 18:51. Senior Jason Kratzke reclaimed his varsity spot by running more than a minute faster than the day before, and under 22 minutes for the first time since Bagley Sept. 19. His 21:35 was only 9 seconds off his previous best.
We started going to back-to-back meets the end of the season when Crosby first came into our section. This year we did it so we could start and end the regular season on the same course. It worked well, despite the weather and long bus trips, for both the boys and girls. It’s an excellent confidence booster to see improvement from the early season and be able to take that into the section meet next week.
