Alive and well

Volunteerism is definitely not dead in Rainy River and neither is the community’s affinity for it’s Community Centre.
On Sunday a call to help rip out the old carpet in the community centre’s hall was answered by about 20 people. What would have taken staff hours took volunteers about 30 minutes.
A couple of weeks ago the same scenario was in hand. Several families banded together to offer the community a wonderful gift. They offered to pay for the paint to give the community centre’s hall a badly needed facelift. They also agreed to provide elbow grease to get the painting done.
The offer had a profound effect on the volunteers who sit on the Recreation Board, including myself.
In recent times the board has struggled with the attitudes of some people feeling that perhaps the community does not need a recreation centre. Or does not use it enough.
To have the general public come forward and offer to help improve that facility truly is testament that the public does want a recreation facility. The usage of the facility is also on the rise with groups like minor hockey taking full advantage of having access to two arenas in Rainy River and Baudette.
Other recreation initiatives are currently underway and the support for them is in some cases already proving to be there in and around the community.
It is very refreshing to know that volunteerism is alive and well in the Rainy River area.
