It was a weekend marred by accidents and in some cases death as residents across the Rainy River District awoke Monday morning to many stories of what happened.
Two snowmobile accidents occurred, the first taking place on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010 around 8:30 p.m. Two snowmobiles were involved in a head-on collision on a trail north of School Road south of Hwy. 11 in Couchiching First Nations Territory.
Killed in the collision was Aaron Hyatt, 33, of Fort Frances. The driver of the second machine and his passenger, a female, were taken to the hospital in Fort Frances and treated with non-life threatening injuries.
The second snowmobile accident took place on Friday, Jan. 29th around 11 a.m. A truck and a snowmobile collided on an ice road at Sabaskong Bay on Lake of the Woods. An unidentified 49 year old man was reported by the Ontario Provincial Police as being killed in the accident. He was driving the snowmobile.
Sunday morning there was a train-van collision at the Atwood #2 crossing just east of Rainy River. The van, driven southbound by Daniel Krahn of Dawson Township was apparently clipped by a slow-moving westbound freight train. It ended up on its roof on the north side of the tracks. He, his wife and two children were both taken to Rainy River Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
There was also a report of a death in Pinewood over the weekend. All O.P.P. Media Relations Officer Anne McCoy would say on Monday via e-mail was, “As for the sudden death investigation in Pinewood, due to the sensitive nature of the incident, I will not be making a public release at this time.”
