Solemn memorial

RR Legion historian, Marjorie Stinzi, placed beautifully hand knitted poppies around the howitzer at the Legion Cenotaph in memory of those lost in the Battle of Somme which began July 1, 1916. 7,000 commonwealth and French troops died on the first day. By the end of the conflict in November, about 420,000 had been killed.

It's official!

The Rainy River High School class of 2016 officially marked their step towards adulthood by following in tradition and tossing their caps into the air after graduation ceremonies last Wednesday evening.

Memorable evening

Rainy River's Community Prom was held Saturday evening at the Rainy River Recreation Centre. 33 high school students participated including Reece Marchuk and Megan Jewett.

Main St. Makeover

Rainy River's Main Street is nearly done its makeover. The project involved all new infrastructure last summer, new sidewalks, new street lights and on Monday paving began. By lunch time one strip of asphalt was down the 300 block and heading south.

40 district residents gathered in Rainy River last Saturday to build a replica of houses that they have helped build in Guatemala over the past decade.

New look!

The preferred Continual Steel I Girder construction will look much different than the existing bridge. Here is an artist's rendition of the new international bridge between Rainy River and Baudette.

Big donation!

66 Rainy River High School students donated $4,106 to KidSport Rainy River last week! The big donation came from a Wake-a-thon fundraiser they held at the school on April 22, 2016. Each student was asked to raise at least $50 and some raised as much as $150. The money will be well used, helping kids in the community who may not get to play sports due to family financial constraints. Back row, Madison Whetzel, Calli Vandenbrand, Morgan Haw and Sarah Whetzel who represented RRHS students. Receiving the donation on behalf of KidSport was Jordyn Wood, Tori Wood and Taylor Brusven.

Recruiting Seniors

Norma-Jean Johnston left, was set up at the Rainy River Trade Show on Saturday to try and generate more interest in the Rainy River Seniors Activity Depot. She is seen here talking to Elaine Clifford.

No shortage of cake!

Rainy River Hospital Auxiliary member Betty Blight had no shortage of Strawberry Shortcakes to decorate with whipped cream last Wednesday when the Aux. held their annual Strawberry Shortcake fundraiser at the RR Legion.

Owl Theatre presents Mulan!

Members of Rainy River High School and Riverview Schools' Owl Theatre dazzled audiences last Thursday when they performed the musical Mulan. The Huns invaded, as portrayed here by Liam McKenzie (Evil Shan), right, Stephen Hartnell (captured soldier), center, and Connor Ivall (a Hun).
