The Turkey Vulture

By Al Lowe
Contributor

This is the ugliest bird we have in Ontario. There are uglier ones on other continents.
Our vultures are mostly thought of as black, although if you get close up, they turn out to be a dark, sooty brown. Head and neck are bare and red, much like the head of a tom turkey - hence the name Turkey Vulture. The scientific name is Cathartes aura.

ecoEnergy Retrofit Program needs some retrofitting of its own

Submitted by
Ken Boshcoff M.P.

A recent Toronto Star investigation has raised some serious concerns about the efficiency of the ecoEnergy Retrofit Program. The report found significant discrepancies between the energy audit recommendations provided by four different firms in the Toronto area. The audits called for renovations ranging from $3,000 to $25,000 on the same Toronto house. “That means homeowners could spend big money on ill-advised retrofits and waste as much as $10,000 in grant money from the federal and provincial governments,” says the Toronto Star.

We would put a community dental plan into action

By Howard Hampton

Not many things light up your life like a great smile - a child’s toothy grin, a smile across a crowded room, or a grandmother’s wise knowing smile.
Smiling is an infectious practice, but over 40 per cent of low-income families in Ontario are tight-lipped because they can’t afford proper dental care.

Curse of the purse

By Jack Elliott
Correspondent

Men, thank goodness have wallets. Although they will swell to the proportions of a cane toad before exploding, they’ve nothing on the female purse.
The lady’s handbag or purse is a wonderful invention run-a-muck. Invented before pockets, the purse has a lineage and personality as unique as each owner.

Cats should also be governed by a bylaw

Letter to the editor,
I would like to address a major issue that seems to be on many peoples minds. CATS why is there bylaws for dogs but not cats. Being a non-pet owner, I have a garden that might as well be the community litter box.

Spruce Creek Golf Course set to open Aug. 18th

By Ken Johnston
Editor

It has been three years in the making and on August 18th the sound of people yelling “Fore” will echo across Morson’s Spruce Creek Golf Course.
It started with a dream by Ken and Laurie Pentney who live just south of Morson. Running a tourist camp and commercial fishing operation for years they decided that they wanted to help develop the area’s economy in a slightly different way but complimentary to the tourist industry.

Not many businesses can say they have been around for 70 years let alone say they have been run by the same family that long.

John Deer Boating!

Ayla and Andy Holmes introduced a new product line for John Deere at the boat races. The normally farm/land equipment producer would have been proud of the job these two did. While they did not win their heat, Paul and Justin Dennison won (above the John Deere entry) for time but Alya and Andy received Best Theme Boat honours.
