Not so quaint

It is terrible to think that our beautiful and usually peaceful community is just not all as quaint as we think it is.
There is definitely a criminal element alive and well here.
Last week’s break and enters are proof of that.

CSI Rainy River?

Could there be too much CSI on t.v.?
In the rash of break-ins last week it appeared the thieves were very “neat” in their crimes. Were they experienced criminals from outside the community or ones that may have received an education from the popular t.v. series.

Beach closed due to ecoli

Swim at your own risk... or better yet stay out of the Rainy River at Hannam Park and Government Dock.
Last week the Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) posted warnings all along the waterfront warning people not to swim there. Brian Norris, Public Health Inspector, told the Record that water samples taken produced dangerous counts of bacteria; particularly ecoli.

Ont. moose program under review

program, Natural Resources Minister David Ramsay said today.
“The review will address concerns raised by the hunting community within the greater context of the entire moose program,” said Ramsay. “We want to ensure our world-class program continues to respond to environmental changes as well as the needs of society.”

Elsa Wiersema, 72

It is with great sadness, the family of Elsa Wiersema announces her unexpected passing on July 5, 2007.
Elsa was born April 11, 1935 to Eldert & Johanna Romyn in Zwijndrecht, Holland and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1948, settled in Portage La Prairie and later in 1952 moved to the Rainy River district.

Up front, I want to gratefully acknowledge the love and caring given me by my wife, the Pearl of the Orient. If it wasn’t for the Pearl’s, supervision and suppression of my glutinous appetite, and attendant prodding to insure I get a modicum of exercise, I would probably be long dead. So, if you don’t like my musings, you know whom to blame.

Poll shows driver’s fatique a big problem in Ontario

OTTAWA, July 9, 2007 /CNW/ – A new poll by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) shows that a startling number of Ontarians are driving while drowsy and fatigued.
Poll findings reveal that nearly 1.3 million Ontarians fell asleep or nodded off while driving at least once in the past year. Of these drivers, more than 100,000 did so on five or more occasions.

Lake levels continue to rise

The level of Lake of the Woods is 322.96 m (1059.6 ft), a 45th percentile level for this time of year. The lake level rose 8 cm (3 in) over the past week and is expected to rise 6 to 10 cm (2 to 4 in) over the next week. Lake of the Woods outflow was increased from 250 to 300 cubic m/s on Wednesday, July 4th.

$1.3 million announced for infrastructure in Fort Frances
