The many months of June

We are almost at the halfway point of the year. June is the month of weddings. June is the month of graduations. June is often considered the month of celebration because so many good things seem to happen. It is also one of those months that have no statutory holidays.

Thefts make us feel unsafe in RR

While a petty theft may seem just that to some, to others having something stolen from their yard is a big theft.
Recently a number of residents have reported having all or some of their solar lights stolen from their yards.

Public school board passes balanced budget

(June 5, 2007) - The Rainy River District School Board has approved the 2007/2008 Balanced Budget of $37,960,097. The Board was faced with the challenge of a 3% decline in enrolment and continued adjustment to the substantial reduction in funding from 2006/2007. Reductions to all budgets across the system were realized in order to balance the budget. The Board will draw $369,266 from reserves for multi-year commitments to the Achievement School Project, Aboriginal Achievement Leader, and transportation. Judy Eluik, Chair of Finance Committee, stated, “This budget continues to support our goal of having students work to the best of their abilities. Thanks go to Laura Mills, our Superintendent of Business, and all the others who had input in the development of this budget.”

Piece of glass beckons a local history lesson

It is interesting that one little paragraph in this column last week generated so much conversation.
It was the following words that started the ball rolling:
“I found a piece of an old bottle. It says on the piece “Drink High Top, bottled in Fort Frances, 10 fl. oz.” But all I have asked about it do not remember what High Top was... soda? beer? Maybe you know?”

Eunice Irene Rusnak (nee Van Tassel), born February 15, 1933 in Worthington Township, Ont, passed away at the age of 74 on Saturday June 2, 2007 at the Rainy River Health Care Centre, Rainy River, Ont.

Anna La Rocque (nee Saurer), 82

Peacefully on Monday May 28, 2007 at the Rainy River Hospital, Rainy River, Ont; Anna La Rocque (nee Saurer) of Stratton, Ont passed away at the age of 82.
Anna will be lovingly remembered by her six children, Alana (Wolf) Rechlin of Atikokan, Ont; Allan John Jr. of Stratton, Ont; Margaret (Tim) Scott of Devlin, Ont; Eldon (Mary) of Dryden, Ont; David of Stratton, Ont and Glenda (Al) Radbourne of Manning, Alb. Seven granddaughters and nine great grandchildren.

Beautiful Bloomers

The “Beautiful Bloomers” our local beautification committee met Thursday, May 31 at Rainy River Activity Depot.

There was an excellent turn out. Plans were made and many ideas brought forward to beautify our town.

13 year old boy killed by ligntning in FF

(Fort Frances, Ontario) On May 30th, officers from the Fort Frances Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police investigated a sudden death.
At approximately 6:00 p.m. an active weather system developed in the Fort Frances area. A lightning strike occurred in the area of the St. Francis Sports Field near a group of youth that were playing. Bryce Devoe, age 13, of Fort Frances was transported by paramedics to LaVerendrye Hospital where he was pronounced dead by medical staff. Children that had been playing in the area at the time of the lightning strike were taken to Hospital as a precautionary measure and treated for minor injuries.
