Community groups across the Thunder Bay-Rainy River riding have recently been advised that they will NOT be receiving funding under the repackaged summer jobs program being touted by the Conservative Government.

Just the right timing needed when harvesting forage crops

Forage growth and quality goes through a transition during the growth cycle. At the beginning of the growth cycle, the forage quality is high but the yield is very low. As the plant matures there is a significant increase in the forage yield but an accompanying decline in forage quality. The pasture manager’s goal is to have livestock consume the forage at the point where there is optimum yield of quality forage to produce the best livestock performance.

My playoff superstitions

Three years ago, I was moving my son into a townhouse in Ottawa. He had completed his first year at school and was moving out of residence. The Ottawa Senators were the Cinderella team and the neighbours who watched us move into the townhouse were curious about our hockey affiliations.

NWO could be a "have" province

Howard Hampton made some really good points last week while meeting with our chamber of commerce and town council, stopping just short of suggesting Northwestern Ontario become its own province.
On electricity he clearly pointed out that we are getting screwed by Southern Ontario. We produce some of the cheapest power world right here in NWO, but yet pay some of the highest per kilowatt hour rates. Why is that?

Bear with us while we are short staffed

Well for those of you who are close to us at the Record office you know that we are currently short staffed by 1/3.
Our longest serving employee of nearly 20 years, Linda Johnston, has had to take some time off for medical reasons.

CT scanner implementation delayed until Fall

While the money has been raised the CT scanner has yet to be ordered by Riverside Health Care Facilities.
Teresa Hazel, Riverside Foundation Director, told the Record in an email Friday that, “We are still waiting for Ministry of Health approval to go to Tender. I think the process stalled a bit with the LHIN’s taking over funding of district hospitals.”

Twenty members answered roll call at our May meeting, and it was really nice to see so many of you out. The minutes were read and the financial report given with both being approved as read.

4–H beef club learns about cow calving

The Stratton 4-H Beef Club held its first meeting on Thursday, May 10 at the home of Donna and Bud McQuaker.
There are 16 members in the club—Philemon and David Nussbaumer, Kylie Fileccia, Cassie and Jamie Westover, Nolan and Damon Short, Jared and Matt McQuaker, Kevin Gemmell, Myna, Tegan, and Ben Miller, Tyler Nielson, and Mitchell and Jessica Haw.
