Legion Ladies Auxiliary held their monthly meeting on May 9th with President Hazel Tullett presiding. There were 16 members in attendance. The minutes from the April meeting were not available as our secretary was away.

This Saturday the Alzheimer’s Society will hold its 5th annual Walk for Memories in Rainy River.
Last year nine participants raised a staggering $1,776.05 all of which is used to support local Alzheimers support programs and research.

Last Wednesday in Kenora, the RRHS soccer teams competed in the single “A” NorWOSSAA Championships.
In Boys semi-final action, RRHS defeated Sioux Lookout 1-0 to advance to the finals against St. Thomas Aquinas of Kenora. The boys lost a hard fought final game by the score of 1-0, giving RRHS the silver medal.

It was an exciting start to the season for the Rainy River Legion Fastball club last Tuesday when Stratton took them to an extra inning.
After a moment of silence, with the teams on the baselines, for long time umpire Gus Lindberg, who recently passed away, it was time to play ball.

While there was concern low water levels in the Rainy River might put a damper on the fishing opener, anglers young and old proved on Saturday there are still lots of fish in the Rainy River.

The Rainy River and area youth soccer program is again vastly popular.
There are four different age groups for the program ranging from turning four this year to 14. This is the third year and each year the enrollment has risen. Players are from Rainy River, Bergland, Dawson, Pinewood, Stratton, and Baudette.

In recent years, we have witnessed both natural and human caused disasters. We have watched news coverage of affected families living on their roof tops to avoid flood waters or hiding in basements during horrendous wind storms. With these images fresh in our minds, we must look at our own preparedness for a disaster to strike.

Spiders. Not too many people really like spiders. In fact, an awful lot of folk really detest them. But spiders, like everything else, have some very good points.
The most commendable one is that they eat insects - and insects are our very worst enemies in the natural world. One man estimates that the weight of insects eaten by spiders, in Canada, in a single year, would just about equal the weight of all of the people in Canada. They do away with billions and billions of insects each year.
